Common questions

What is Gemini 1.5 Flash good for?

High-frequency multimodal tasks: it was the light companion to Gemini 1.5 Pro, taking text, images, video and audio.

When is Gemini 1.5 Flash not a good fit?

Any new work: Google retired it in September 2025. It had no tool calling, and its short maximum output limited long answers.

How does Gemini 1.5 Flash compare with Gemini 2.0 Flash?

Google says Gemini 2.0 Flash builds on Gemini 1.5 Flash with better performance at similar speed, and adds native tool calling, image and speech output, and real-time audio and video input. Same 1M-token context and text, image, audio and video input. Gemini 1.5 Flash came out 9 months earlier and has an older knowledge cutoff (November 2023 against August 2024).

Can I self-host Gemini 1.5 Flash?

No. Google Cloud does not publish the weights; Gemini 1.5 Flash is available only through hosted APIs.
